SIX DEGREES OF SOCIALISM

We have always been told that in the event of a global nuclear war, the only thing to survive will be the cockroach. What we were not taught is that the cockroach population will in all probability form and live under a socialist government. Socialism – the bad idea that just won’t die. I have come to believe that the history of collectivism is so vast it has worn a groove in the path of nations. America blazed a new path but is always having to fight to keep herself from falling into that socialist rut. Each time our nation veers off course into the rut, we make it deeper and wider, so it is now becoming frighteningly difficult to pull our country out of this dangerous trench and back onto America’s true path to greatness.

I thought that in this inaugural newsletter I would quickly summarize why socialism is a bad idea. Here goes… it doesn’t work. It fails every time, without exception, period. Why? Because it is based on a false premise; the premise that any one group of people, be they ever so knowledgeable, can know enough to successfully shape the economy, the individuals in that economy and the world around them according to their wishes. It is a fatal hubris.

The individuals espousing socialist/collectivist policies almost always have the loftiest of goals. Whatever the good intentions, distilled down to their very essence you will find the common thread is a wish for equality among men. The only way that equality can be achieved is by income redistribution in its various forms. Many individuals in such a society will begin to feel enslaved as the government begins to infringe upon the rights of some men to satisfy the needs of other men. The most productive in society inevitably chafe under such a lack of freedom. Over time, the government will see with some dismay that the only way to achieve compliance with its plan is through the use of ever-increasing force. It is the law of unintended consequences writ large. I am sure you can see where things go from there. If you can’t, just crack a history book.

Some of you may be wondering why I am talking about socialism. You may believe the constant reassurances by our politicians that they are not socialists. Despite their wide-eyed claims to the contrary, the liberal Washington establishment is working in every possible way to bring about a socialist state. They try to stay away from the term “socialist” because while your average American probably does not even know what it means, they do know it sounds bad.

There have been countless books written on the subjects of socialism so my meager summary is obviously not sufficient. If you are interested in learning more on this subject I would recommend the following three books first: The Road to Serfdom by F.A. Hayek, Capitalism & Freedom by Milton Friedman, and The Conscience of a Conservative by Barry Goldwater. I recommend these first because they are all slim and short. Perfect for those who wish to be more politically astute but simply do not have the time to read a tome like Atlas Shrugged.
