Obama’s Afghanistan Strategy: Stall Until We Cannot Possibly Win, Then Pull Out

Is there a shred of morality, compassion, or human decency in this entire administration?  We just got confirmation this weekend of what most of us had already been dreading for some time…Obama plans to wait until the Afghan elections (or should we say the U.S. elections) are finalized before making any decisions on troop deployment.

And how do we know this?  Because Emanuel and Kerry came out this last weekend to explain the delay.  Unfortunately though, they neglected to tell their own Sec Def so he had to hear about it like every other schmoe watching the Sunday morning talk shows.

 – US Senator John Kerry has said it would be irresponsible to send more US troops to Afghnistan before the result of the presidential election there is clear.  (click here for story)

 – White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said Sunday that before a decision is made on whether to send more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, the United States must assess the strength and viability of the Afghan government.  (click here for story)

At least Gates is putting up the valiant fight:

The Obama administration needs to decide on a war strategy for Afghanistan without waiting for a government there to be widely accepted as legitimate, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Monday.  Gates’ comments put him at odds with top White House and NATO officials who are balking at ordering more troops and other resources to Afghanistan until the disputed election crisis there is resolved.
The Pentagon chief called the Afghan elections—and the larger issues of curbing corruption in its government—”an evolving process.”

“We’re not just going to sit on our hands, waiting for the outcome of this election and for the emergence of a government in Kabul,“…

“The outcome of the elections and the problems with the elections have complicated the situation for us.  But the reality is, it’s not going to be complicated one day and simple the next,” he said.  “We’re going to have to work with this going forward, and I believe the president will have to make his decisions in the context of that evolutionary process.”

Good try Gates, but Obama knows he can put off an Afghan decision indefinitely while he waits for that “stable” government to magically appear.
